Campaign: Save the 'Gimson Houses' (Campaign Closed)

Leicester's lax planners have permitted a completely unecessary demolition of the 'Gimson Houses' at 119-121 Glenfield Road in Western Park. The replacement for this characterful building two rows of terraced houses and a block of 16 flats to be built by Eastern Shires Housing Association (ESHA).

This local landmark was built by architect Charles Baker for members of the Gimson family (Ernest Gimson being one of the most influential designers of the 'Arts and Crafts Movement'). Although an attempt at listing the buildings in 2002 failed, Leicester City Council could easily have declared the block a 'Conservation Area' under emergency powers (as they did with Granby Street to prevent unacceptable alterations to the Wellington Hotel).
