Campaign: A Castle for Leicester

Leicester Castle Hall, The Castle Yard and St Mary's de Castro church comprise probably the most charming piece of historic Leicester. They are mostly ignored, neglected, closed and generally swept under the carpet. We want to change all that.

This campaign seeks to open the whole area as a substantial tourist attraction to showcase Leicester's Saxon,Norman and Medieval heritage. We want to see the Great Hall and the cellar, along with the empty houses on Castle Walk, restored and reopened as a museum, with a visitors centre. We'd also like to see a replica of the Norman castle keep (tower) built on the original castle motte (mound). And why not reopen the Castle Inn public house?

"It [the Castle Hall] is not regularly open to the public, unimaginable in any other city in Europe". - Simon Jenkins writes in his bestseller England's Thousand Best Houses. Is this the sort of message we want to give out about Leicester?
